SPONSORED: If you’re searching for data in different locations, it might be time to implement a PDM system.
We’ve coined the phrase, “There’s no such thing as unmanaged data,” because in all reality, even if you’re just using the file storage on your computer, you are managing your data in some form. The question isn’t whether you have “unmanaged data,” but instead is whether your data is managed well.
PDM, or product data management, is a system in which design data and engineering processes for a product are strategically managed in one centralized location. Everything from CAD files revisions, to change orders, to Bills of Materials, to part numbers, is all kept in one secure, manageable location.
If you find yourself looking for data in multiple locations, loosing track of changes because there were too many revisions, or unable to easily share strategic parts of your project with your suppliers or collaborators, then a PDM solution might be right for you. But, what features should theright PDM solutionoffer you?
We’ve got some suggestions:
Multi-CAD Data Management: The product you choose should have direct CAD-integration across multiple CAD systems, so you are not leaving any key suppliers out of the loop.
Secure CAD Storage: You should be able to control access with permissions for version control and retrieval without resorting to building and maintaining a hardware stack.
Revision Control: You should be able to track every change automatically, see who changed what, when, and why, and revert as needed.
Comparison Overlays: The product you choose should also have the ability to compare two versions of a file with dynamic overlays.
3D CAD viewer and markup: You should be able to give sales, marketing, suppliers, partners, and customers real-time access to 2D/3D CAD data without licenses.
Intuitive Dashboard: You should be able to quickly access the data you need at the click of a button.
Configurable workflows: You should be able to tailor the workflows you need without custom coding.
Business software plugins: You should be able to automatically bring in data from the programs you use every day.
Ready out of the box: Finally, you should be able to start quickly without tedious customization using standard templates with the configurability to meet your needs.
