CADspeed -- Optimizing Hardware for CAD Software

Dear cadspeed.wordpress.com,

I have a question concerning installing software like SolidWorks and CATIA.

When I install programs like Photoshop or After Effects I usually create separate partitions on multiple hard drives. For instance:

HDD1:
'OS' partition
'Adobe' partition

HDD2
'Scratch disk' partition

HDD3 (data)
'Page file' partition
Data partition

HDD4
'Page file' partition
Data partition

I separate the scratch file and page file so they won't fight over the same free space on HDD1. Using multiple hard-drives divides the workloads and thus increases performance in my opinion.

(Separate Adobe and OS partitions on the same drive does not increase performance. I just prefer it, because I usually install the Master suite.)

Are there similar performance tweaks one can do when installing Solidworks or CATIA? Like installing OS on one HDD and CATIA on another? Can you install CATIA and SolidWorks on the same HDD?

Thanks in advance.

GPU-Accelerated Transparency for 3D CAD with Creo Parametric 2.0 and AMD FirePro

Order Independent Transparency (OIT) in computer graphics programming terminology denotes any technique that can correctly render overlapping semi-transparent objects without having to sort them before they are being rendered. Rendering semi-transparent objects has always been a problem because the blending operation is order dependent: when a semi-transparent fragment is rendered, the underlying color (i.e. the background) is crucial for the final color to be correct.

Hello,
I am the CAD manager for a design group of 8. We are looking into upgrading our computers to be able to accommodate our 3D modeling needs. We primarily use AutoCAD and CADWorx for piping and vessel design. We do not use surfaces or rendering. My question is, what CPU/GPU combination should I be looking into for high performance orbit/zoom/pan/refresh? Our price point is below $2000 and we would like to get a comparable Laptop as well.
Thanks

Hi,

We just posted an article, “10 Reasons Most Computer Manufacturers Didn’t Make It” (http://www.myispfinder.org/ispblog/2012/10-reasons-most-computer-manufacturers-didnt-make-it/) . I thought I'd bring it to your attention in case you think your readers would find it interesting.
Either way, thanks for your time!

Processors for CAD Hardware: Find the Balance Between Multiple Cores and Increased Single-Thread Performance

Posted by cadhardware

Several years ago processor vendors began backing away from a sole focus on cranking up clock frequencies and otherwise striving to squeeze every last possible bit of performance from single-thread processing. That path was heading down the road of diminishing returns and leading to other problems, most notably excessive power consumption and thermal output.

Hi,
I run Hyper-V and a VM running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with RDSH and want to run ITW's HomeBase on this server for 2 WAN users for security and logistics reasons. Will RemoteFX help for sessions instead of VDI? Dell says it only supports the nVidia Quadro 2000 on my R710. Do i really need this card? I already setup my server and software but have not tested with a WAN connection. This will happen tomorrow. Microsoft's posts about this are too confusing along with the same from Dell.
